This dish combines the rich, savory taste of salmon with the bold, spicy notes of traditional jerk seasoning. You can easily prepare jerk salmon using an air fryer, oven, or grill.

A Taste of the Caribbean

Jerk seasoning which hails from Jamaica is a vibrant blend of spices and herbs originating from Jamaica. It typically includes ingredients such as allspice, Scotch bonnet peppers, thyme, and ginger. This unique combination provides a spicy, smoky flavor profile that pairs well with the rich, buttery taste of salmon. Jerk salmon not only offers a taste of the Caribbean but also brings a healthy, protein-rich meal to your table.

Health Benefits

Salmon is renowned for its health benefits, being an excellent source of omega-3 fatty acids, protein, and vitamins. Omega-3s are known for their heart-protective qualities, and they also support brain health and reduce inflammation. By combining salmon with jerk seasoning, you’re not just treating your taste buds; you’re also nourishing your body with a wholesome, nutritious meal.

Preparing Jerk Salmon

You’ll need high-quality jerk seasoning and fresh salmon fillets. You can make your own jerk seasoning or you can use store-bought if you prefer. Use boneless salmon and ensure your salmon is fresh and properly cleaned. You will also need fish seasoning, lime juice, honey and oil.

Marinating the Salmon

To infuse your salmon with the rich flavors of jerk seasoning, marinate it for at least 30 minutes to an hour. If you have more time, letting it sit overnight in the refrigerator will deepen the flavors. Ensure the salmon is evenly coated with the seasoning for the best results.

Cooking Methods

Air Fryer

Using an air fryer is a quick and convenient way to cook jerk salmon while achieving a crispy exterior and tender interior.

  1. Preheat the Air Fryer: Set your air fryer to 400°F (200°C) and let it preheat for about 5 minutes.
  2. Prepare the Salmon: Lightly spray the air fryer basket with cooking oil to prevent sticking. Place the marinated salmon fillets in the basket, skin-side down.
  3. Cook the Salmon: Air fry the salmon for 8-10 minutes, depending on the thickness of the fillets. The salmon should be flaky and reach an internal temperature of 145°F (63°C).
  4. Serve: Remove the salmon from the air fryer and let it rest for a few minutes before serving. Enjoy with your favorite sides like rice and peas, festival, yellow rice or coconut rice.

Oven-Baked

Baking your jerk salmon in the oven is a straightforward method that delivers evenly cooked, moist fillets.

  1. Preheat the Oven: Set your oven to 375°F (190°C) and allow it to heat up fully.
  2. Prepare the Baking Dish: Line a baking dish with aluminum foil or parchment paper. Lightly grease the surface to prevent sticking.
  3. Bake the Salmon: Place the marinated salmon fillets in the baking dish, skin-side down. Bake for 15-20 minutes or until the salmon is cooked through and flakes easily with a fork. Aim for an internal temperature of 145°F (63°C).
  4. Broil for Extra Crispiness: For a crispy top, you can broil the salmon for the last 2-3 minutes of cooking. Keep a close eye to prevent burning.

Grilled

Grilling jerk salmon infuses it with a smoky flavor that complements the spicy jerk seasoning perfectly.

  1. Preheat the Grill: Preheat your grill to medium-high heat, around 375-400°F (190-200°C). Oil the grates to prevent sticking.
  2. Prepare the Salmon: Place the salmon fillets on a piece of aluminum foil, skin-side down. Fold the edges of the foil to create a shallow tray, which helps to catch juices and prevent flare-ups.
  3. Grill the Salmon: Place the foil tray on the grill and cook the salmon for 10-12 minutes with the lid closed. The salmon should reach an internal temperature of 145°F (63°C).
  4. Optional Direct Grilling: For a charred finish, you can place the salmon directly on the grill grates for the last 2-3 minutes. Be careful when flipping to avoid breaking the fillet.
  5. Serve: Let the salmon rest for a few minutes after grilling. Serve it with sides like grilled corn, black beans, or a refreshing cucumber salad.

Tips for Perfect Jerk Salmon

  1. Choose Fresh Salmon: Fresh, high-quality salmon will ensure the best flavor and texture. Look for firm, moist fillets with a vibrant color.  Wild caught salmon is always best.
  2. Don’t Overcook: Overcooking can make the salmon dry. Keep an eye on the cooking time and check for doneness with a meat thermometer.
  3. Adjust the Heat: If you prefer a milder spice level, reduce the amount of jerk seasoning or choose a less spicy blend.
  4. Resting Time: Allow the salmon to rest for a few minutes after cooking to let the juices redistribute, ensuring a moist and flavorful bite.
